i-RED portal

The i-RED project concerned the website re-design and deployment of the Non-Governmental Organisation Institute for Rights Equality & Diversity. The mandate of the i-RED public website is to update and inform its target audiences about the Institute's activities, projects and news. The website offers an online library of fully-documented reports, publications and surveys which are carried out by the Institute. Furthermore, the i-RED channel is a multimedia-rich resource hosting video, audio material and articles and public interventions, primarily by the Institute's staff, aiming to promote the anti-racism and xenophobia agenda.

Eworx's priorities while executing the project, have been to design a website that will help the Institute boost its brand, better promote its work and raise awareness about the socially sensitive domain it deals with. Finally, as in all the projects it undertakes, the Eworx team has focused on developing an accessible, modern, functional and robust website offering an enhanced user experience.

Protagon

PROTAGON is one of the largest of news commentary portals in Greece with an average of more than 12,000 unique visitors per day. It hosts opinions and articles from popular Greek journalists and sponsors categories such as “Subjects”, “People”, “Dolce” and “Books”. It also hosts videos from the very popular Sunday night TV show “Protagonistes” which presents original stories of everyday heroes.

EWORX was responsible for (a) re-designing parts of the front-end (other parts did not change from the previous design), (b) developing a state of the art News Management System (NMS), (c) delivering a full scale migration of the content from the previous CMS and (d) delivering a video streaming and video advertisement solution.
In detail, the News Management System included the following features developed and tailored to the client's needs:

Gallery management for videos and photos
Article management
TV Shows management
Tags, categories and user management
Shouts management (a Twitter-like implementation that presents short texts in various parts of the website)
User comments management
Newsletter auto-generation and management
Author's Blogs
Box Management to enable the content management in various 'box container' pages

The migration involved x number of articles, x number of author profiles, x number of comments, x number of tags, x number of video and TV show files, x number of photos, and x number of photo galleries.

In addition, the UX Team performed an in-house usability evaluation of specific high profile pages (e.g. the search page, the article page) and co-ordinated the design and production of more effective designs.

Finally, we developed an infrastructure for supporting the various banner advertisement requirements.
EWORX also provided the technical infrastructure for hosting the videos and serving video advertisements of the portal through a supporting web application (Stream Video Labs).

NewView

The New View project aimed to identify the particular challenges in teaching both migrants and non-migrants in the same classroom and to develop new views and approaches to handling these challenges. More concretely the project::

Explored the specific challenges faced by teachers who teach mixed groups (migrants and non-migrants) and the challenges faced by course-participants attending these courses;
Adapted existing and develop new teaching methods to integrate the demand of intercultural education;
Defined methodical-didactical competences and skills which describe the required profile of teachers in multicultural adult education; and
Sensitised the impact related to the issue of language. As integration is deeply correlated with language skills, migrants who are taught in a language sensitive manner are better educated and can improve their services and cultural communication skills. As a consequence this factor has sustainable influences of accessing the labour market.

EWORX was the designated technical and communication/dissemination partner on the project and provided the following services:

Palso Website

The new redesigned website for PALSO (Panhellenic Association of Language School Owners) was the closing project of 2010 for EWORX, launching on December 29.

The website, found at www.palso.gr, aims to be a source of useful information regarding the activities of PALSO. EWORX consulted PALSO on modern web best practices regarding the functionality of such a high profile portal. Following this process, a wide range of features was implemented in order to enhance interaction between PALSO and its members. Such features include:

newsletter subscription,
electronic polls,
latest news,
online version of the Association's newspaper,
SMS dispatch to subscribed members,
online subscription for the exams run by the Association and
online announcement of exam results

The graphic identity of the website was also an example of brilliant work performed by our company's web design department!

Domna Samiou

The Domna Samiou Greek Folk Music Association is a non-profit organization founded in 1981 and its aim is the preservation and dissemination of Greek traditional music. The project’s aim was to design, develop and deliver a portal that would have the dual role of serving as a hub for knowledge regarding the biographic details of Domna Samiou, and a repository of information, resources and media regarding her personal work and related information.

The portal needed to balance aesthetically design with easy access and navigational tools to visitors. Equally the back office needed to be powerful and intuitive to use, in order to allow administrator users of different levels of responsibility to manage the information stored and provided on the portals front end.

The portal provides users with biographic details and profiles of not only Ms Samiou but also others who have worked with her or with her work; lists related media articles, concerts, albums and songs all interlinked together for easier navigation and usage. Searching, filtering and ordering of lists further enhance the experience.

In addition to the traditional functionality – the following extensions were included:

Back Office Administration (LMS): The TOOLIP CMS environment was extended with the addition of a back end office (closely integrated with the front end). Users are provided with functionality which facilitated improved administration of complex pages (e.g. homepage), taxonomy and metadata administration, multimedia library and management.

Musical Database Administration: The LMS back office allows for full management of the database entities related with the songs, albums, concerts, partners, publications and media clippings and the relationships between them.

Advanced Text Searching (Apache Lucene): This powerful text search library of features is used to aid searching through the musical library for specific texts besides using the common searching interface (which utilises keywords)

Basic Social Bookmarking toolbar: All pages of importance have been provided with a toolbar of useful icons that allow for printing, sending an email wit the page’s content but also to submit and promote the page in Twitter, Facebook and Google.

Europe Direct Intranet

The Europe Direct Intranet is a web-based system which is accessible only to the approx. 1.500 members of the ED Network.

It aims to offer them a collaboration and information platform and allow members to share good practices, find information easily, network and work together more effectively. The website features a Library section where several document types can be searched using multiple criteria, a comprehensive members directory, full events coverage, discussion groups and other collaboration tools.

In developing the website, focus was placed in allowing users to find information easily and personalise their experience by creating their favourites lists and subscribing to information feeds of interest.

Mepmis

Inappropriate use of substances by employees causes problems in companies for many of European employers. These include increased sickness absence, lower levels of performance and reduced productivity of staff. That in turn can undermine the firm’s competitiveness and position on the market.
In small and medium size enterprises line managers and supervisors have a key role to play in developing and promoting good corporate practice and minimising the effects on the company of inappropriate use of alcohol and drugs by staff.

However it is line managers and supervisors, who may well use alcohol or drugs themselves, who are required to take action when someone they manage uses substances in a way that impacts on their ability to do their job. Unfortunately, guidance for managers on how to act in these circumstances is often inadequate, incomplete or missing altogether, and many companies do not possess the tools to enable managers to deal with substance use at a corporate level.

The MEPMIS project is working to tackle these problems. The project is creating an e-learning package, accessed via the MEPMIS website, which teaches line managers practical ways in which they can help minimize the impact that the inappropriate use of substances has on their organization.

Project objectives:

To identify the learning and skill needs of line managers in European SMEs in terms of addressing substances use, work and employment
To use the experience gained in two UK training projects to develop a training resource
To identify and incorporate innovative experience from the UK, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands and Poland into the resource
To develop the resource to publishable condition – including textual development, piloting, evaluation, publication, launch and dissemination

Outcomes:

Dedicated website which will provide an e-learning platform
Expertise and capacity to develop and provide ‘face to face’ training courses in each of the partner countries
Resources on the subject of substances and work which can be used by line managers and supervisors in SMEs and larger companies

European Economic and Social Committee

The overall aim of the project was to analyse, design and implement the new website of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), one of the key European Institutions which sits between the European Parliament, the Commission and the Social Partners. Part of the project was to migrate the vast content from the old website to the new one.

The Eworx team undertook:

The adaptation of the Committee’s graphical charter to digital media (Website, Intranet and Member’s portal)
The application of the adapted graphical charter for the EESC website
The installation of the TOOLIP™ Web Content Management System for the EESC website
The entire redesign and re-structuring of the EESC website
The migration of the content from the old website to the new, involving heavy re-structuring, tagging and thematic classification
The implementation of a global search tool that will allow visitors to search the entire content of the website in various ways and to retrieve relevant results
Staff training and provision of documentation and supporting material associated with the administration and use of the TOOLIP CMS
The annual maintenance of the TOOLIP installation of the EESC website and the updating and maintenance of any supporting material that have been developed.

During the website design process, several prototypes have been evaluated to assess both the proposed Information Architecture and the usability and navigability of the designs. Low-fidelity and high-fidelity prototypes, in addition to wireframes, have been produced and tested within closed user groups, using the appropriate tools.

A lot of attention was placed in content re-structuring. The proposed Information Architecture's primary aim was to effectively promote and render more accessible the vast quantity of content of the website. This was achieved by heavy inter-linking and tagging so that users can retrieve all types of content that share a common theme or attribute. Additionally, new navigation paths were analysed and determined until the new structure of the EESC website was finalized.

While building the website, the Eworx team deployed a number of Methodologies, including:

Palso Exams

Palso Exams is a web based closed system, utilised by PALSO (Panhellenic Association of Language School Owners) to simplify the registration and results announcement processes for the exams run by the Association.

It is only accessible by PALSO members through a username/password combination and serves three main purposes:

electronically create a new registration form and/or edit older registration forms
view the results of the exams one has registered for
edit member's profile

On top of that, the system helps PALSO keep track of all registration forms created by members, minimize user generated errors by editing any form and export system data to help the organization of the exam itself.

Palso Exams has been the first step of the PALSO-EWORX partnership, which was later continued by the redesign of the Association's Portal at www.palso.gr.

Hellenic American University

The purpose of the project was to re-design and implement the new Hellenic American University online presence and visual identity.

DancePress

This project concerned the design and development from scratch of an online web magazine about contemporary dance. EWORX graphics design department came up with multiple proposals for the DancePress logo. The home page followed a "box-oriented" design pattern, which makes navigation and content consumption very easy for the portal visitor.

The website is offered in two languages, EL and EN, although in the beginning only the former shall be available.

The project also included the design of a newsletter template that would have the same "look and feel" as the home page and would make it very easy for the website admin to disseminate content and news.

Dancepress.gr is hosted by EWORX.
